Willie Parker grassed… ten years later, they came for their revenge

In the 70s, Willie (Terence Stamp) is a repentant bank robber who grasses up his firm for a deal to stay out of the nick. 10 years later, Willie’s living an idyllic life in rural Spain when he’s snatched by an experienced hitman (John Hurt) and his apprentice (Tim Roth), to bring him to the crime boss he testified against for his revenge. Thus begins a fraught road trip across Spain.

Browsing through free streaming options, I came across this, remembered Stamp had just passed away and gave it a go. Not a lot of action, but a lot of tension, as the unlikely travelling companions (the target, the hitman, the apprentice, and the collateral hostage, Laura Del Sol) make their way across a landscape straight out of Don Quijote in this beautifully shot thriller directed by the great Stephen Frears.

Even though Hurt and Roth are the bad guys, Stamp is definitely not a good guy, and none of them are quite what you’d expect.

Roth won an award for Most Promising Newcomer playing the eager apprentice hitman with a leather jacket full of weapons. The film also has Aussie legend Bill Hunter (Gallipoli, Strictly Ballroom) and Spanish star Fernando Rey (The French Connection), and in “blink and you’ll miss them” roles, Jim Broadbent and Ralph Brown. With Eric Clapton doing the opening music.
