After recently being reminded of Blame! I wanted to read more from it’s author Tsutomu Nihei. I did not expect that everything he touches would turn gold like Blame! did and was correct in that that assumption. I liked some of his other work namely the Knights of Sidonia anime based on his manga and really liked Tower Dungeon though this ones still ongoing.
First I read Aposimz. I could take it or leave it. It’s very similar to Blame! in the setting and pacing but has a greater emphasis on the story and characters. While the setting is very cool and I enjoyed it, I never felt connected to any of the characters. Which is sad since the story is mostly told through dialogue between them.
Secondly I read Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. I enjoyed my time with this one. The setting is more nature focused here but the story is still about a mega structure. It works well and reminded me of Ghiblis Nasciaä of the Valley of the Wind. My biggest problem with it is that it never manages to build any tension. It kind of feels like the manga is being pulled in two different directions in that the characters and story feel very shounen but the setting is seinen. But overall its good.
Thirdly I read NOiSE. It’s very short. Nothing much to say about this one other than it’s more Blame!. +rec
