Why don’t pirate sites just shut down entirely when they get out of the game? I remember when fuwanovel went straight (into the trash) and lost all relevancy.

Do these poor anime actually get popular or even make a profit? Or is it more throwing garbage at the wall in the hopes that it’ll stick?

Same old story, just western chauvinism and puritanism. There’s a reason piracy is the default for otaku, fansubbers are super stars, and it’s bad news when a publisher pays attention to the world outside Japan.

My money is in this specifically being an attack on the queer community, btw. Anime is pretty queer coded (see yaoi, yuri, otokonoko, etc) and the queer community thrives in online spaces (especially in more regressive states like Texas), soooo make anime illegal under the classic bullshit of ‘think of the children’ (nonsense, btw, anyone who hides behind that is doing something horrific themselves). Bam, you hurt a bunch of innocent people and undermine art (also a classic fascist goal) for years to come.

Two of those are the expected problem children, but that first one kinda brain broke me. I suppose bernie has supporters of all stripes, but I’d still expect better.

We’ve had to deal with Christian cultists and Western chauvinists since the inception of anime. It’s why piracy is not only accepted but considered the default way to interact with the medium, it’s why any news about Western interests being taken into account is bad news, it’s why fansubers are god damned heroes. This is a very bad sign, but it’ll be tears on a river for all it actually does (on it’s own).

C is not bullshit at all. the subject matter being more distasteful does not change the way it interacts with our brains. And we especially shouldn’t make this already pointless concession when dealing with Christian cultists, they’ll use this inch to go for miles if you let them.

Why does anime need to exist? Why does entertainment need to exist? things don’t need a reason to be legal, they need a reason to be illegal.

there is way more bad than good, because SAO got popular years ago and showed publishers that isekai fans will accept absolute slop, and not even the kinda slop you might like on a bad day. That said, there are some real good ones out there. In addition to what other people have said, I’d like to point out what should have gotten big instead of SAO; Log Horizon. It’s also about getting trapped in a game but log is generally about dealing with the world and the implications of it coming to life . For a minor spoiler:

the sex gags in konosuba are so tame I’d question if your friends are as emotionally mature as the stereotypical white, suburban soccer mom.

Yeah, the anti-power fantasy thing was the entire selling point, now it’s just not interesting enough for me to care. The characters are better than the average isekai i suppose but not particularly profound otherwise, the animation is fine but not amazing, the issues generally aren’t as big as other isekai (even the game mechanics were explicitly a function of the relics iirc), but without the twist there is nothing interesting there to make the show stand out from anything that isn’t a shitty isekai.

If you are completely addicted to the concept of isrkai it’s one of the better ones to watch, but otherwise meh.
