<Sentenced to Be a Hero> Vol. 1 - I read it because I got curious after I’d seen a couple of people looking forward to the anime this winter season. I can’t say that I like it. It’s on the bad side of emotionally manipulative. The emotional manipulation lacks subtlety. It’s like the author is bonking you on the head and screaming in your ear what you’re supposed to feel. I’m sure it will find its fan base in the anime adaptation for the constant action and the half-naked loli (I’m sure she’ll get some VA with a super cute voice to finish the otaku-bait package). The general premise is interesting at least, but it feels rough around the edges. Like the idea is there, but it’s not quite ready to be put on the page. Maybe it matures in the following volumes, but I think I have seen enough from the written source and it’s not for me. Maybe the anime will make me reconsider, but until then, it’s a hard drop for me.

edit: Okay I’ve seen the anime’s pilot and it stays a hard drop. Exactly what I expected it would be.

<Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start With Magical Tools> Volume 11 - The story is at a standstill and not moving forward for several volumes now. It switched POVs away more and more from the main couple to side characters like padding. If the author doesn’t know what to do with it, they should end it gracefully and continue with side stories in this setting like Lucia and the Loom. They clearly can write good (sometimes bordering on great) prose, there is no reason to let this series drag on longer as it needs to.

<The Accursed Chef and His Pair of Furry Foodies> Volume 2 - pretty much more of the first volume, which was pretty much more of Sword Tensei. The next volume is set up to be a break from the established setup, so I want to see how it will play out.

<My Magical Career at Court: Living the Dream After My Nightmare Boss Fired Me from the Mages’ Guild!> Volumes 1, 2, 3 - Overly simplistic romance. MC is written in an inconsistent manner. She is extremely confident, extroverted, and competent, but every now and then, the author seems to remember that the premise was that she is supposed to be the typical OP but low self-esteem trope. Just to be forgotten 2 paragraphs later, where she beats up bullies or tells nobles that they can eat dirt. I think this is a case of an author being shackled by their own stupid series title. Volume 3 was a tournament arc, which I generally see as a personal affront to my sensibilities. But the end of it was good, at least, so I’ll let it pass.

    <Ascendance of a Bookworm> - Part 2 - Volume 04

I watched the Anime again so I had to read the Epilogue and Extra Chapters.

Question about the Epilogue (Mostly Part 3 spoilers, 1 Part 4 Spoiler)

In the epilogue they use Mynes citizenship disc as a grave marker.

In a later volume we learn the importance of them and that the Aub can use it to kill a citizen.

Does this not leave Myne at risk by having her Disc just sat there? Any Aub or Arch Ducal family member could use it to dispose of Myne.

    Theories for why it’s safe:

    1. The majority of her enemies are Nobel’s who would not know of the practise

    2. No noble would debase themselves going downtown

    3. [Part 4 Spoiler] The colour no longer matches Myne as she was Dyed a different colour. ( But then wouldn’t the Nobels who got married have mismatching discs?)

    <TsukiMichi: Moonlit Fantasy> - Volume 01 & Part of Volume 02

As @[email protected] has mention it several times I decided to take the plunge.

I love the Anime and the LN is just as good. Lots of little bits of extra information. Things fall into place better, I finally understand why characters react the way they did.

    Examples:

Tomoe on purposely took the male attacker back, so was actually surprised when it turned out they were female.

The way the contracts work from names being a vital part and consummating the contract?

Ace Mils actually cheated the level paper. (The anime hints but doesn’t say it outright)

Rembrandts history and why Tomoe say he was actually a bad person

More information about the hero’s companions

Glad you are enjoying Tsukimichi! The first season of the show in particular did a lot of trimming and rearranging of the source to better fit a seasonal anime structure. They basically cut out all of the other POVs (the other heroes) from the first season and moved it into the second season.

If memory serves, granting of a name gives those under a ruling contract more power. Also, if the name is closely aligned with the personality/abilities of the named, then it kind of synergizes and provides more of a boost. This is an idea that was kind of introduced into the story, but hasn’t really been heavily explored or expanded as the story has gone on. If you find the mechanic interesting, then a very similar thing is done in Reincarnated as a Slime where it is much more fundamental and fleshed out.

The idea of “true names” is a very ancient one in mythology and literature. Based on the wiki page, it looks like it goes all they way back to Egyptian mythology. Off the top of my head, it is a feature in an epic like The Odyssey by Homer as well as a fairy tale like Rumpelstiltskin.

Getting back to Reincarnated as a Slime, lots of people like to compare Tsukimichi and Slime. The two series bear a lot of similarities in their worldbuilding and mechanics (naming being one of them). Slime was published later, but adapted into anime first, but they do tend to draw inspiration from one another.

The other thing I have noticed is the anime has a lot more humor. There are lots of funny bits in the anime but the LN is more serious. I heard Eminence in the Shadow is similar, the LN, Manga and Anime have different tones.

Yeah the Myths and Legends Podcast had an episode on Egyptian Mythology. If I remember correct Ra was the top god as he knew the true names so could bring them into existence.

Yeah I they defiantly have similarities. Again not read the LN but the anime’s both have similar themes.

Question about the Epilogue (Mostly Part 3 spoilers, 1 Part 4 Spoiler)

Answer from the Q&A in the Fanbook #1

“Q: Myne was registered with two medals—one when she was a commoner, and one when she became a noble. Is the medal on her commoner grave still active?

A: No, Ferdinand knew the dangers of this and acted accordingly. The medal on her grave is an unused one that nobody is registered to, while her commoner one has been safely disposed of.”
