Not only is the animation bare bones, but they also change stuff around or give characters a different personality. For example, the female knight Panamera is in the light novels first extremely strict and overpowering for the MC. Only later did he find out that she is actually very caring and nice. The anime adaptation did a scene showing her caring personality before she meets MC, which completely contradicts her first impression.
The fiancée character is also something that leaves a different impression in the anime. She has low self-esteem because she was told that her skill is useless, similar to how MC was sent away because his skill was considered useless, but she was still raised as noble of a big house until her aptitude test. In the anime, she comes across as meek and incompetent. Just something to follow MC around like a puppy to glaze his ego. I mean, that’s also true to some degree in the LN, but at least there she has some own agency.

I wonder how they will bridge that gap when they realize later in the story how fucking overpowered her skill actually is (again, mirroring MC). It just doesn’t track to have her so mindlessly meek and then switch to slaughter-murder-machine mode.
