I am not a fan of the art style, and in general, I hold 1995 and SAC with high regard (everything but 2045) so I dunno. The 1995 movie was a key part of me finding my own artistic taste (alongside Sans Soleil and Life is Beautiful, which knowing that Mamoru Oshii closely admires Chris Marker, there’s one degree of separation between the two), so yeah, I am definitely not feeling this. It does stick to the manga pretty strongly, which is pretty admirable given the sea of moe/isekai slop we’ve been buried under. So, there are things I do appreciate, even if its not for me.
That said, the exaggerated elements remind me of the PS1 game cinematics, which I liked. But it was a video game and it was fun, so…
Ironically, the closest actual feelings I have match those I had watching the GITS live-action movie and Tron Ares specifically – two projects full of people who loved the property, but can’t successfully execute due to cultural norms, writing, producer interference, and so on.
