Saw this in my feed and decided to give it a try. I’m not a huge anime watcher and only kinda know of nichijou because of a meme (good morning evernyan! Oh my gah!) but so far I’m really digging this. I don’t get the connection tho??
The art style is really cool and I was kinda shocked because I’ve never seen anime try to emulate depth of field like this before.
Definitely going to upgrade to a more heat resilient briefcase for my ramen needs tho.

That’s Azumanga Daioh, hence the confusion. If you look up something that’s actually from Nichijou the resemblance is obvious.

I think it’s probably the simplistic character designs that make it possible for the animators to go above and beyond with their cinematography. Simplistic character designs, talent, and hard work.
I didn’t think a show could make me laugh harder than Nichijou did but Arawi and Kyoani did it. It was way better than I could have ever hoped for. The whole champon scene killed me and I actually had to pause the show because of how much it tickled me. And man did it really make me miss the dry champon I had in Nagasaki.
Artstyle and Story Telling is amazing loved it.
Kyoani did it again! That was vibrant and fluid animation. The use of thick, non-uniform line art combined with saturated, uniform color really set City apart from other currently running anime. The simpler color and line art made it much easier to animate big and expressive movement.
They also go and beyond in animating all the visual and sound effects. It made everything more coherent.
Definitely the best animated anime I’ve watched in recent years.
Time like this is why I wish I could read Japanese names to fully appreciate all the people worked behind it.
- aaaaah the colours the animation aaah
- very Nichijou like humour as expected
- at 7:29 they employ one of my favorites: calligraphy/font annotated speech
- the city overviews are wonderful, always like when anime zooms out
- at 8:30 there is a split screen, I only know of Lucky Star having done that before (also Kyouani)
- artist/editor interaction, reminds me of Gochuumon wa Usagi desuka?
- at 10:31 the “armless form” appears, previously seen in Nichijou and Azumanga Daioh. Seen the greats but not popular broadly in anime?
- the “action scenes” like the wine cork scene are very much like Nichijou (like the Yukko/Mio sausage scene)
- the sections with small interludes betwixed, a la Nichijou. However the sections seem to smoothly connect to each other before going off into their own direction. This adds a lot of world building and making the location feel real and alive.
- It is interesting to see how this fleshing out of the location continues. Another anime that takes place in a relatively small town and in which that location is quite important to whole is Aria, which does that very successfully.
- Wako is a real wacko, god bless her soul
- It’s EP 1 and we already have a broccoli scene. Truly Nichijou 2.0 in spirit.
I’m impressed by the soundtrack and sound design. For most things they had a great manga to copy from, but the sounds are all brand new. It fits the animation and style very well though.
They’ve raised the bar considerably from Nichijou with these production values.
The scene with rain stood out.
Felt a lot calmer than Nichijou, but maybe that’s just their respective OPs fooling me. IIRC Nichijou itself also takes a while to become truly great so I’m looking forward to what kind of gags we get once we’re through with the first wave of character introductions.
I really like some direction choices made here. Music that is slightly off withe the general vibe of a scene. Pacing and distinct art style, make this episode pop. I can’t wait for more extreme gifs that will come out of this.
We are so fucking back!
Finally the new Nichijou season we deserve!
