I keep thinking this series can’t possibly be as good as I’ve come to believe it to be - that I’m somehow building it up in my mind in the time between episodes. But then another new episode will drop and prove again that it really is that good.
I can’t even really pick out anything specific to comment on, since it was all so good - Asa’s lonely rage, Makio’s crunch time distraction immediately replaced by genuine concern, Emiri’s help and Sensei’s unexpected but sensible relief to find out she was only skipping, Shingo’s perfect support, Makio’s unwavering honesty, and of course Asa’s breakthrough.
Everybody cares and everybody pays attention and even though none of them really know what they’re doing, they sort it out anyway, and it touches me like almost nothing I’ve ever seen before.
I barely write anything about this show but only because I have hard time to type out all these feelings it evokes in me. Every week I’m equally amazed by the quality of storytelling and how all technical bits support it so well. That ending got me crying 😭
Whenever I start to type something about the show in here, I feel like it isn’t adequate enough for the subject matter and then just decide to not comment at all. Especially after the last couple episodes got heavier with emotion.
Alright, this is a hard one, but I’m guessing what Makio lost isn’t even a person - it’s something conceptual. What’s harder to guess is exactly what it is she lost.
Hope? Sentimentality? The courage to forgive?
Maybe one of you who is wiser can tell me?
I’d tend to guess too that it’s something conceptual. At this point, I expect that I won’t figure it out and will be surprised when (if) it’s revealed, but then it will fall neatly into place and make perfect sense.
My first thought was that it was her sister that she lost. As in their “sisterhood”, not as in her “death”. But earlier when they had their falling out that made her hate her. Maybe they were close once. I’m not sure if it’s a realistic depiction of a sibling bond, but it’s something that would fit into the META of the show. It’s what I would do if I were a writer when trying to spin the story around a central plot point.
