First half was peak slice-of-life.
Qifrey is a great teacher; that was one of the best way to teach someone. To be specific, it’s not the part where he explicitly told Coco to incorporate magic into everyday life that impressed me. It’s when he got Coco to practice magic without telling her to (by requesting for her to bake the potato). Some of the best lessons I had in my own life were experiences like these.
Second half was more world-building. It’s quite obvious that there’s a conspiracy - that the Knights Moralis are going to be the bad guys and the brimmed hat witches the good guys. History is always written by victors after all.
Having a great teacher can sometimes make all the difference. I still remember that one math teacher that actually taught me how to learn things. It literally changed my life.
Interesting choice to flip the mirror motif.

Also, this was too cute!

That scene got me good
Olruggio is a brimmed hat isn’t he?
I can’t shake the association with Coco’s first experiences and those glowing paving stones that are “(his) master work”
But he’s obviously not a through-and-through cackling evil villain, so I doubt the brimmed hats will be either.
It just doesn’t seem like that kind of story.
I’m worried I’m going to lose touch with this anime. I think on episode two post someone pushed me to watch it as I’m an old toonami anime watcher. (Currently watching and loving Dorohedoro). The feels of the anime is top notch, the glowing bricks second experience got me good and I love it. The art style is fuckin beautiful and enjoy the characters of who they are……
But is this story going to be too….young(?) for me. Those who read the manga, will this mature, or get dark enough to show a strong growing up story? If I don’t get strong life challenges, then I would like to see a rapid maturity in the characters but not aggressively. The introduction of the watcher did help calm my worry thoughts. Great show and it’s in a good direction, I hope I don’t fall out of it.
